RUBY

The Bonkers Springer Spaniel.

Our Ruby in the boot of my Rover.

"She's as Mad as a Box of Frogs"

Our Ruby is a Springer Spaniel and they are well known for being a bit head strong and pleasing them selves as to what they what to do. Tell them to sit and they run away and want to play. But, I’ve been told and have seen a few other Springer’s that are so well trained, I’m sure they could cook a Sunday roast and then wash-up afterwards.

It’s fantastic to watch a Well Trained Springer, or any other breed of Gun dog for that matter. Seeing them run around in every direction they are told to go in and fetch and carry goods back and forth. Watching any well trained dog is pleasing to the eye for anyone and I was determined to instill some discipline into Ruby and train her to work and to do what I wanted her to do, when I gave a command.

After two years of trying to teach her to be a working dog, I have given up and will be attending, along with Ruby, dog training lessons. I think half the reason Ruby won’t do "as told" is because I’m not teaching her correctly. I need training on how to train a dog. Now don't get me wrong, Springers train easy on the basic household duties you want them to do. It's getting them to be a working dog is what needs the correct training and if you haven't got the right skills, then you, like me, are going to find it hard to do.

However, we can't go to any training lessons until she has had her pup's. I had her mated with a Field Trial Champion called "Denford Danny of Belvden". He is affectionately known as "Spot". He was so well trained that he didn't need any instruction, as he just knew what he was supposed to be doing, what a Great Dog.

Anyhow, that’s something to read about later and I shall be putting photos of her pups on this site when they are born. Right now I need to go back a few years to when we first got Ruby and show some photos of her as a puppy. We'll catch up with her pups later on this site.

She was almost three and a half months old when we got her and I found it hard to get her to do anything I wanted her to do at first. But she trained up well as a good home loving pet. As you go though the photos you will see Ruby growing and you will be able to read up on her life and times as she grows into adulthood.

I Like Cats, NO REALLY, I do.

Ruby and Tommy having a snooze on my bed.

Looking at the photo above you wouldn't think for one minute that we had trouble stopping Ruby from chasing Tommy all over the place. At one point, I put them both in the hallway in the house and left them together to fight it out. There was a bit of barking and meowing and then it went quiet. Just as I was opening the door to see what was up with them, I just caught Tommy giving Ruby a swipe on the nose. His claws caught her just right and she gave out a little yelp and run straight out through the now open door to the kitchen and sat there half looking at me for comfort and half trying to lick her nose to relieve the pain. I gave her a few pats on the head for reassurance and she sort of looked like she was grateful and gave a look as if to say that she wasn’t going to hassle to cat any longer. From then on, she seemed to give Tommy a wide berth and gradually they did get used to each other. Now, as you can see, they sleep together. Although Ruby will still get very jealous and push Tommy off of the bed and sofa if she thinks she’s missing out on fuss and cuddles.

About six months old.

Here she is at around six months old.

Note the size of the "Chew Toy" in front of her.

Looking Small in a Big Basket

Looking a bit Surprised and probably wishing we would leave her to sleep in her big basket.

Been out and got wet.

Here she is looking a bit wet and dirty after a good run out down at The Sixfields Lakes.
